Why do I have lower back pain when pregnant?

September 2nd, 2009 by admin

Whenever I get pregnant my lower back immediately hurts only 3 to 4 weeks into my pregnancy. Its so painful as if I’ve slipped a disc! It just suddenly becomes painful randomly, from no injury. The pain lasts about a month and I can barely walk! Laying down at night is agony until my back settles into place. Don’t want to take pain killers because of the baby. Anyone else heard of this or know why it happens to me?

Back pain can come from your size, the number of pregnancies you’ve had and how you sleep. I got sciatic nerve pain very early on, but found that it came from the way I was sleeping. It was making the uterus put pressure on the sciatic nerve. Try putting a heating pad on it for a few hours and then make sure you sleep comfortably with a pillow between your legs. It helps me to sleep with my legs straight too. I sleep in my side with the pillow with my legs straight and I haven’t had as many problems.

Wow. It sounds kind of like sciatica, but that usually doesn’t start until the baby is bigger.
Have you asked your doctor? They’re supposed to know that kind of thing.

Check with dr. Try to get a referral to physio. Could be trapped nerve, or Symphis Pubis Dysfunction. I’ve had that, and it’s not nice, also gets worse throughout your pregnancy and the more pregnancies you have, it get’s worse too. If it is SPD, they may be able to give you the bump support belt, which takes the bump weight off your lower back so that it doesn’t strain you.
    Good Luck

I’m only five weeks pregnant, and from week three I started getting very bad back pain. Especially in the evenings!

when i went to the dr she said that this could be caused by the uterus growing a lot quicker and larger than the body is used to!
she also mentioned that it is due to the frame and size of the body, i have quite a slender back, and if this is the same for you then that might be the reason.

I hope this helps, it is quite a simple explanation!
And I sympathise with you, as often its painful when i walk places.

The back pain during pregnancy is a common thing because of balancing the body and control self together.
